French Landscapes By Jeffrey Pratt
Jeffrey never tires of painting outside 'en plein air'.Driving in his camping van throughout France on an annual pilgrimage in his van, eyes peeled, hoping for a painting. Whatever the time of day once found the scene has to be painted, tired or not. Out with the painting gear, setting up in record speed, struggling with the changing light and eventually a painting appears. After 35 years of painting in France he has his favourite places to camp and paint. Sometimes it can be 36 degrees outside, dust on the canvas, flies and beetles crawl across the wet brushwork. The challenge to finish the painting before the light changes or somebody moves is exhilarating.
I never tire of painting outside. Nothing can beat it. I feel the wind in my face and the heat on my back( if I'm lucky) and that energy and feeling always comes through in the painting, unlike anything that can be achieved in the studio or from a photograph. Outside, its fleeting, moving and there is NO time to waste. Jeffrey Pratt
